Single dental implant

Replace a single lost tooth with a fixed, long-lasting solution, without touching the neighbouring teeth when they are healthy.

A titanium implant placed in the bone acts as the root and supports an individual crown, with appearance and function close to those of a natural tooth.

+ Who it is for

This treatment may be suitable if…

Whether it is suitable depends on the assessment of your panoramic X-ray, CBCT scan and medical history.

You have lost a tooth through extensive decay, trauma or fracture.

A tooth has been extracted and you want to prevent the neighbouring teeth from shifting.

You do not want healthy teeth to be filed down for a conventional bridge.

You are looking for a fixed, long-lasting solution with a natural appearance and function.

You want to help preserve the bone volume in the area where the tooth is missing.

+ The solution

An implant that replaces the root, a crown that replaces the tooth

Titanium implant

A small titanium screw, inserted into the jawbone, replaces the root of the lost tooth. Titanium is the material of choice in dentistry thanks to its high strength and excellent tolerance by the body.

Zirconia crown

The final crown is custom-designed in zirconia, combining strength, function and a natural appearance.

Immediate loading when indicated

Whenever the primary stability of the implant allows, a fixed temporary crown can be fitted on the day of surgery. This technique is used mainly for the front teeth, for aesthetic reasons. For the back (posterior) teeth, when replaced individually, the normal healing period is preferred to protect the implant from chewing forces.

+ Stages

How this treatment works

Implant treatment always has at least two stages and generally requires two stays in Porto. When additional procedures, such as bone regeneration, are needed, extra stages or stays may be planned. The schedule and the interval between stays are set according to your clinical situation.

01 Before the trip

Initial remote assessment

The medical team reviews your panoramic X-ray, photos and medical history to make an initial assessment. When necessary, they may request a CBCT scan to study the available bone in more detail.

02 Video call

Treatment plan and quote

A free video call in which our team presents the treatment plan, timescales and costs in detail. Ask any questions you have before making any decision.

03 1st stay

Implant placement surgery

The implant is placed under local anaesthesia. When indicated, a temporary crown is fitted on the same day to fill the gap.

04 Healing

Osseointegration

A period of 4 to 6 months during which the implant integrates with the bone. The team follows your progress remotely.

05 2nd stay

Fitting the final crown

A second short stay for the impressions and the fitting of the final zirconia crown.

06 After you return home

Follow-up

Our team remains fully available to answer any questions and to support you at your annual implant maintenance appointments.

+ Frequently asked questions

About the single dental implant

See all frequently asked questions.

Why an implant rather than a tooth-supported bridge? +
Unlike a conventional bridge, an implant replaces the missing tooth without the neighbouring teeth having to be filed down when they are healthy. It can also help to limit bone resorption in the area concerned.
Does the surgery hurt? +
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, so that you do not feel pain while the implant is being placed. If you have a dental phobia or significant anxiety, conscious sedation may also be offered, after a medical assessment. It allows you to stay awake and cooperative, while feeling deeply relaxed. In the following days there may be discomfort, swelling or sensitivity, which is usually controlled with the medication prescribed.
How many trips to Porto will I need to make? +
Generally two: a first one for the surgery and, where applicable, the temporary crown; a second one, around 4 to 6 months later, for the impressions and the fitting of the final crown.
How long does it take to get the final crown? +
On average, 4 to 6 months after surgery. The timescale may vary depending on bone quality, whether additional bone or gum regeneration techniques are needed, and clinical progress.
What material is used for the implant? +
Titanium. It is the benchmark material in implant dentistry thanks to its high strength, durability and excellent tolerance by the body. We work with Straumann implants.
Is there an age limit? +
There is no upper age limit. The only criterion is that jaw development must be complete, generally from the age of 18. The assessment always depends on your general health.
What if I have little bone where the tooth is missing? +
In most cases it is possible to place an implant. The team can assess solutions such as bone regeneration or a sinus lift before or during implant placement. Whether they are suitable always depends on the CBCT scan.
What happens if the implant fails? +
Implant failures remain uncommon. Careful planning, the surgeon's experience, the use of recognised implant systems, and the patient's health and follow-up all help to reduce the risk. Long-term studies report implant survival rates above 97%, although these may vary with each clinical situation. If an implant does not integrate properly or has to be removed, the medical team assesses the cause and the possible solutions. After the necessary healing and depending on the clinical conditions, a new placement may be considered. The manufacturer's guarantee applies to the body of the implant under the terms set by the brand.
